Indians Search for Tyres — But Shop for Bikes
A few months of real, anonymous activity across 18 Indian cycling stores: we search for tyres and consumables, but research and shop for ₹90k+ bikes — and barely anyone leads with price.
What 18 Indian cycling stores look like from the search box. A few months of real, anonymous activity on GearLama — no names, just patterns.
The 10-second version 👇
- 🔧 We search for the small stuff that wears out — tyres, chains, bottles.
- 🚲 We shop for the big stuff — bikes, averaging ₹94,000 a click.
- 💸 Almost nobody leads with price — only 7% of searches mention a budget.
Same rider, two moods: "my tyre's gone" on a weekday, "should I finally buy that bike?" on a Sunday.
1. What India searches for 🔍
The pattern: the top of the list is consumables — the parts that wear out and get replaced. Nobody's browsing. They know exactly what they need and type it in.
2. What India actually clicks through to buy 🛒
The everyday search is a ₹500 tyre. The click people actually make time to research is a different animal:
| Category | Clicks | Avg price |
|---|---|---|
| 🚲 Bikes | 847 | ₹94,073 |
| 👕 Apparel | 131 | ₹7,027 |
| 🖥️ Electronics | 108 | ₹30,386 |
| 🔩 Cockpit | 80 | ₹9,044 |
| 🧰 Tools | 78 | ₹4,276 |
| ⚙️ Drivetrain | 60 | ₹31,330 |
| 🛞 Wheels | 46 | ₹40,609 |
The pattern: the click-throughs flip the search list on its head. The research — the tab you open five times before deciding — is the expensive, high-consideration gear: a ₹94k bike, a ₹40k wheelset, a ₹30k bike computer.
3. It's not about the discount 🏷️
The pattern: Indian cyclists here aren't bargain-hunting. Only 1 in 14 searches mentions a budget, and only 1 in 9 products is discounted at all. They search for a specific thing — a model, a size, a part — and want to know who has it in stock right now. Availability beats a sale.
The honest footnote 📏
- Early data: ~1,300 searches and ~1,600 click-throughs over a few months.
- A direction, not a national census — "here's what we're seeing so far."
- A click on a ₹94k bike means someone is researching it — not that they bought it that afternoon.
So what? 🎯
- Need a consumable? Type the exact thing — "Continental GP5000 700x28", "SM-RT70 rotor". That's what the box is best at.
- Researching a big buy? GearLama shows the same bike across 18 stores — see who stocks it, and at what price, without opening 18 tabs.
Search for tyres. Shop for bikes. We'll be here for both. 🚲
